At a press conference this morning, it was announced that the Council has come up with the super-majority votes needed to pass the $20 Congestion Reduction Charge. With the deal, the Downtown Ride Free Area will be phased out by October 2012.
So, Metro Service is spared from deep cuts, and pay as you leave is leaving soon. There are some other parts to the deal, but these are the ones that matter most to me.

I'm pretty stoked about the $20 tag fee + the removal of the free ride area.
I've never been a fan of the free ride area, as it just slows down everything and causes confusion plus frustrations with usually drunk or disorderly people when they argue with the driver - as if they invented the free zone. :)
...did I mention I was stoked by this move!!! :)
It's interesting that what was not mentioned in any press releases or news reports is the fact that this move will prevent the lay-offs of anywhere from 400-500 bus drivers. I guess no one cares if a government employee loses their job?
